Explore The Back Of Your Painting.

Back Of Painting

If you turn your painting over, the back has variety of useful markings and labels.

Starting at the top, is the painting's serial number:

Serial Number

Some years ago, I came to realize that I needed to number my paintings. So at that time I arbitrarily numbered every painting I had in my studio and storage. From that time on I assigned a number at about the time I finished each painting. This means that this painting is numbered 359, but there are other unnumbered paintings out there that precede the system.

The number appears on both the stretcher bar and the canvas.

The Copyright Stamping:

Copyright Notice

This reads:

"This Work Is Copyrighted

Peter K. Worsley

© July 2009 <-- This date changes with each painting.

All forms of reproduction are

forbidden without written

permission of the artist."

The basic words are rubber stamped on the back of the canvas. The date and copyright symbol are hand written onto the canvas.

The Hanging Wire:

Hanging Wire

The hanging wire spans between two screw eyes set into the side stretchers. The wire is coated with plastic and the ends are threaded through the screw eyes and twisted upon itself. The twisted ends are then sealed with heat shrink tubing.

The Registration Seal:

Registration Seal

Each of my recent paintings is registered with the global organization Fine Art Registry. Each painting bears a unique official Fine Art Registry™ seal number, and is registered in the FAR® central secure database, along with photographs and a full description.

For more information see my article "On Protecting Your Investment."

Be sure to register your painting as suggested.

The Painting's Title(s):

Title and Labels

At the bottom left of the painting's canvas is written the painting's official name or occasionally, multiple names.

Below, usually on the bottem stretcher bar, are two adhesive labels: one repeating the copyright data, and the other with the title and artist contact data.

The Copyright Label:

The copyright label states:

"This Work is Copyrighted July 2009 <-- This date changes with each painting.

All forms of reproduction are forbidden

without written permission from the Artist.

California Resale Royalty Act applies." <Click here for more information.
